Work with us: Communications and Marketing Manager

This is a career-making role; it’s your chance to step up and run communications for an ambitious NFP, realising your leadership potential.
  • Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
  • Direct reports:   None
  • Salary: Range between $75,000 – $80,000
  • Per annum pro rata (depending on experience)
  • Plus 9.5% superannuation
  • Tenure: 3 days part-time at 0.6 FTE on a 12-month contract (flexible hours can be negotiated)

About us

The Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF) is an independent, not-for-profit providing services and advice to homes and businesses that want better energy. Our mission is to reduce carbon emissions from energy in Yarra down to zero.

Through our expertise, channels and partnerships we:

  1. Demonstrate pathways to a zero-carbon and equitable society for all.
  2. Influence and inspire residents, businesses and community groups to acquire understanding, invest within their means and take action where possible.
  3. Deliver practical programs with solutions that have a positive impact in reducing energy costs, fossil fuel consumption and associated emissions while improving comfort levels, energy productivity and renewable energy uptake.

As we accelerate our actions with ever more ambitious goals, we need a passionate communicator and digital marketer that can help us achieve a step-change in our impact in reducing carbon emissions in the City of Yarra and beyond.

Ready to establish and lead the Yarra Energy Foundation’s brand and marketing initiatives, you are a climate campaigner with experience effectively reaching and engaging diverse audiences creatively, efficiently and effectively, across owned, earned and paid channels.

About the role

This is a career-making role; it’s your chance to step up and run communications for an ambitious NFP, realising your leadership potential.

You will lead a program of ongoing corporate communications that builds strong brand awareness – establishing a picture of what the Yarra Energy Foundation stands for in the minds of residents and businesses across Yarra. You will do this through maintaining and refining a new website, creating ongoing engagement across socials, conceiving and delivering stories, media opportunities and live activations.

You will define a program for engagement with communities, businesses and stakeholders to grow inquiry for services, establish new partnerships and build a movement of people working towards a 100% renewable Yarra. Working closely with YEF staff and with the support of the board and Chair, new relationships will be formed that support us to increase our reach and impact.

You will also deliver strategic marketing that dramatically lifts inquiry to YEF programs and services. With a focus on digital and content marketing, you will apply your analytical skills to set and reach targets for conversions through Search Engine Marketing (SEM), social media content and advertising, and other localised paid, earned and in-kind partnership activity.

You’ll bring your passion for energy innovation and climate campaigning to an ambitious not-for-profit organisation, where you’ll have the responsibility and freedom to really make your mark in the fight to reduce emissions.

About you

You are a passionate communicator and digital marketer, ready to take on this leadership role, and to help reduce Yarra’s energy emissions to zero.

You:

  • You quickly understand complexity, and translate it into clear, accurate and engaging content, stories and advertising, communicating effectively with a wide range of audiences.
  • You have a strategic outlook, which enables you to define the highest value activity for the organisation across brand communications, community and stakeholder engagement, and marketing of programs services. You can work out what needs to be done and prioritise effectively to get it done.
  • You are a creative thinker and bring a can-do attitude to problem-solving, including stretching a shoe-string budget to make the biggest possible impact.
  • You are a writer and storyteller at heart. You know how to find an angle and how to adapt it for channel, purpose and audience. You’ll use stories to show people the impact YEF is making – building trust and awareness of what we do.
  • You’re a thinker and a doer – as comfortable conceiving a strategy as crunching data or crafting copy.
  • You’re keen to build people management skills, managing volunteers and interns to contribute to YEF’s communications and marketing endeavours.
  • You can structure and deliver reports that measure what matters, to the satisfaction of the CEO, funding partners and the board.
  • You know a bit about energy and climate change. You want to know more, and you learn fast.
  • You’re driven, a self-starter and self-sufficient. You can direct your own work, defining the requirements to reach objectives.
  • You see the task beyond that of getting words on the page. You know the job is provoking an audience to respond as a result of your work and propelling an organisation forward through these impacts.

Key requirements

To be successful in this role, you will ideally be able to demonstrate:

  • Between 4-6 years of experience working in communications or marketing roles, working autonomously for at least 1-2 years.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering effective communications and marketing strategies, across channels, in particular delivering online reach and engagement.
  • Excellent communications and content marketing skills – strong storytelling and writing for various forms and functions, including some media experience.
  • Excellent digital marketing skills, including achieving strong outcomes through social media, search engine optimisation (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM).
  • Some experience in website and eDM management including maintaining and updating page content and blog content and issuing regular eDM communications. (Previous experience with WordPress content management system (CMS) and Mailchimp eDM platform an advantage.)
  • Some experience in media pitching and management, community and stakeholder engagement.
  • Very good reporting skills, defining and delivering routine measurement and insights to continuously improve the YEF communications and marketing function.
  • An understanding of Australia’s evolving energy sector, the policy landscape, and climate-related issues – including of pathways for households and businesses to improve their energy sustainability and reduce emissions. Some knowledge of local government.
  • A degree or higher in marketing or communications, and/or demonstrated industry experience.
